5 Simple Ways Scouts Can Stay More Sustainably When Travelling
Whether you're heading off on an Explorer Belt, an international camp, a jamboree or a weekend adventure, sustainability doesn't have to mean making huge changes.
In Scouting, we're all about leaving places better than we found them, and the same mindset can apply when we're travelling too. Small choices made by a group can add up to a big impact over the course of a trip.
Here are five simple ways your Scout group can travel a little more sustainably when staying away from home.
1. Only Use What You Need
Many hotels provide items such as disposable slippers, mini toiletries and other single-use products. While they might seem convenient, many end up being thrown away after just one use. A simple way to reduce waste is to bring your own essentials where possible and only use the items you genuinely need. For Scout groups, this can also be a great opportunity to encourage young people to pack responsibly and think about the impact of what they use.
2. Reuse Towels During Your Stay
Fresh towels every day aren't usually necessary, especially on shorter trips. Reusing towels for a couple of days helps reduce water, energy and detergent use without affecting your stay. If your accommodation offers the option, consider opting out of daily towel changes. When a whole group gets involved, the savings can be significant.
3. Switch Off Before Heading Out
Whether you're off exploring a new city, taking part in an activity programme or heading out on a hike, it's worth taking a moment before you leave your room. Turning off lights, televisions, air conditioning and other electrical items helps reduce unnecessary energy use while rooms are empty. It's a small habit that aligns perfectly with the Scout value of caring for our environment.
4. Be Mindful About Water Use
Long showers can be tempting after a busy day of activities, but water is a valuable resource wherever you are in the world. Encouraging shorter showers and turning taps off when they aren't being used are easy ways for groups to reduce their environmental impact. These small actions also help young people build awareness of sustainable habits they can take home with them.
5. Choose Accommodation With Sustainability in Mind
Not all sustainable accommodation looks the same. Some hotels and hostels may have recognised environmental certifications, while others are taking positive steps in less visible ways. Examples might include supporting local suppliers, reducing waste, conserving energy or sourcing food locally.
When planning a Scout trip, it's worth looking beyond the price and location to consider how accommodation providers are helping to protect the environment and support local communities.
Every Small Change Makes a Difference
The good news is that sustainable travel doesn't need to be complicated. A few thoughtful choices from leaders, volunteers and young people can help reduce the impact of your trip while still delivering an unforgettable adventure.
